Bicycle Brings Smiles

Three months ago our project staff were hiring bodabodas (local motorbike taxis) for transport between the Hope Street campus, schools and town. Each time they used a bodaboda they worried that the money could have been spent on the children instead.

Tom, the local project director, mentioned the need for transport while we Kiwis were in Uganda. Tom listened patiently while we discussed the running, maintenance and replacement costs of a motorbike when all along he had just wanted a bicycle! The funds were released without hesitation and Tom bought a bicycle the very next day.

Within three days Tom had covered more than 50km on the new bike.

Within three days Tom had covered more than 50km on the new bike. But the staff aren’t the only people making use of it – our children are learning to ride and even running small errands on the bike. The photos really capture their joy. Now our goal is to donate a child’s sized bicycle so that the younger ones on campus can give it a go.
