Keeping children safe

A security fence is urgently needed for the ORA Uganda children's home and agricultural projects in Uganda, to protect the children, and provide food security. In 2007 a small block of land was purchased for ORA Uganda to set up a base for their sponsorship and community development programs. A residential care home was built on the land, to provide a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children. A temporary barbed wire fence was built around a section of the block in 2009, to provide security for the ORA Uganda residential care home. The residential care home provides safe, secure accommodation and care for the most vulnerable children on the ORA Uganda sponsorship program, for example, children who are HIV positive or have sickle cell anaemia and live too remotely to access regular treatment, or who are at risk in their own home for one reason or another. Some of these children require short term care, others long term care. The ORA Uganda base is also used for agricultural programs, including growing crops to feed the children. The team have previously run agricultural demonstration projects. However, theft by passers-by and destruction of crops by neighbours’ goats and cattle have been discouraging for the ORA Uganda team. The temporary fence built in 2009 is now failing, so the ORA Uganda team has asked us to fundraise for a well-built 780 metre security fence around the entire property.
